Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of Ava DuVernay occurred on the 24th day of August on the 24th of August, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise when she was a child. Aunt Denise was a nurse and was a night shift worker so she could dedicate her time to art literature and theatre. She showed DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay was taught by her the power of art as an instrument for social activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother who was a social sassy and instilled DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay was a resident of Compton throughout her life, but would spend every summer with her extended family members located in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's recollects seeing the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay's summers spent in Selma, Alabama would influence her later on to create an animated film on Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay developed an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. DuVernay was an intern at CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay remembers being asked examine the garbage at the home of a member on the jury. The duties she was required to perform left her dissatisfied and so, after deciding not to pursue a career in the field of journalism, she was able to move to the world of publicity. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a junior publicist shortly after graduating from college. She was promoted to the position and set up her own company for public relations named The DuVernay Agency in 1999.
